Sharing updates when copying method content elements

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Attempts to update a method content element copied or the original one result in sharing the changes in IBM Rational Method Composer (RMC).

Symptom

Steps to reproduce

  1. Create a simple library with only one plug-in and one Content Package element.

  2. Create a method content element for example "Supporting Material_1".
RMC tool creates a Guidance element containing the "Supporting Material_1" element

  3. Insert a text in the attributes of the "Supporting Material_1" element for example in the Main Description attribute.

  4. Save the "Supporting Material_1" element.

  5. Highlight the "Supporting Material_1" element. Then right click and click Copy.

  6. Select the Guidance element. Then right click and click Paste.

  7. Rename the new Supporting Material element, in the Resolve Element Name Conflict window, for example "Supporting Material_2".

  8. Insert a text in the attributes of the "Supporting Material_2" element, for example in Main Description attribute.

  9. Save the "Supporting Material_2" element.

  10. Close RMC.

  11. Open RMC.

  12. Open "Supporting Material_1" element and modify the text in the Main Description attribute.

  13. Open the "Supporting Material_2" element. See that the text changed in the Main description attribute of the "Supporting Material_1" element is inherited in the Main description attribute of the "Supporting Material_2" element.

Cause

Copying method content elements results in both elements, original and the copy, pointing to the same xml file.

Verify this as follows.

  1. Click the "Supporting Material_1" element. Then right click and click Show in Resource Navigator, RMC opens the "Supporting Material_1.xmi" file connected with this element in the Navigator window

  2. Click the "Supporting Material_2" element. Then right click and click Show in Resource Navigator. RMC opens the "Supporting Material_1.xmi" file connected with this element in the Navigator window.

As result both "Supporting Material_1" and "Supporting Material_2" element point to the same "Supporting Material_1.xmi" file

This issue has been documented in the Bugzilla Bug 376570.
