Preventive Service Planning

Abstract

To have the WebSphere Application Server Test Environment (WTE) version 7 configured in the same way as the production environment follow the steps in the following technote to install WebSphere feature packs. Use this approach with caution and note that this is not the recommended way.
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21441810

Important: There are a few limitations to this mechanism. The user will not be able to modify features in Rational Application Developer. The following error occurs:

Error modifying. There is already a package installed at "C:\Program Files\IBM\SDP\runtimes\base_v7". The installation directory must not be a parent or sub-directory of a previously used installation directory.

This technote provides the workaround to address the two specific limitations no.5 and no.6 documented in the LIMITATIONS section of the above technote.

Content

WebSphere Application Server Test Environment (WTE) version 7 is designed to make it simple for developers to test their application. It is not necessary to have the same configuration as the production environment. If cloning of production environment is required, it is recommended to install a stand-alone WebSphere Application Server, and use it for testing.

Meanwhile, you can still modify WTE to have a custom configuration. The below tech-note provides information on how to update the feature pack in WTE:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21441810

There are a few limitation in this mechanism that users need to understand.

One of the limitation is that, after adding the WebSphere feature packs, Rational Application Developer installed with WTE cannot be modified.

Workaround
To modify Rational Application Developer, the users will need to uninstall WTE. After completing the modifications, WTE may be reinstalled. Here are the high level steps:

1. Uninstall the imported WebSphere Application Server including all feature packs using IBM Installation Manager. You may ignore the warnings that may occur during the uninstall.

2. Manually cleanup WTE. (assume WTE is installed under C:\Program Files\IBM\SDP)
2.1 Backup and delete C:\Program Files\IBM\SDP\runtimes\base_v7 directory
2.2 Edit C:\Windows\vpd.properties to remove all the lines that are referencing C:\Program Files\IBM\SDP\runtimes\base_v7

Note that the location vpd.properties is platform specific, please refer to the following:

http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/wasinfo/v7r0/topic/com.ibm.websphere.installation.base.doc/info/aes/ae/rins_vpd.html

3. Uninstall WTE using IBM Installation Manager. You will see error during uninstall, and it can be ignored.

4. You can then modify Rational Application Developer, and reinstall WTE.

Additional Note:

Automatic Detection WebSphere Application Server Not in Sync

There are verification checks that run during the startup of Installation Manager and
during the various wizards (i.e. Install, Update) that will check if the previously imported
WebSphere Application Server has been modified by the IBM Update Installer.
If the WebSphere Application Server has been modified then the user will be alerted
and needs to re-run the import to synchronize the WebSphere Application Server
information in the Installation Manager.
