"Error - -2147024770 Automation error The specified module could not be found" when using DbConv to upgrade database

Troubleshooting


Problem

Administrator is trying to upgrade an old database, and so launches \legacy\DbConv.exe. Administrator selects the relevant database and clicks "Run Steps". After a while, an error appears.

Symptom


DbConv Error
ERROR -2147024770 (Hex 8007007E):
Automation error
The specified module could not be found.

Database Upgrade is aborted due to error in processing Step 532.

The specified module could not be found.
Current DB Version is 531

Cause

Code production problem for Controller 10.1.x, where the installer process does not register 'FrCrypto.dll' correctly.

Resolving The Problem

Fix:

Upgrade to a later version of Controller which contains a fix for the defect.

Workaround:

Manually re-register the component FrCrypto.dll.


    Steps:
    1. Logon to Controller application server as an administrator
    2. Launch a command prompt by clicking "Start" - "Run" and then typing in "CMD" <Enter>
    3. Change directory to the c10\common folder (for example using: cd "C:\Program Files\ibm\cognos\c10\common")
    4. Register the file using: regsvr32.exe FrCrypto.dll
    5. Test.
