Project area specificity

Technote (FAQ)

Question

Are resources created in the application specific to a project area?

Answer

Native IBM Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager components—namely products, views, and queries—are global; they are not specific to project areas. The global nature of these components supports the high-level view that the application provides. In summary, Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager effectively supports a single project area. Note that it would not be useful to have multiple project areas because this would not partition resources into separate buckets.
On the other hand, shared components such as reports and impact analysis diagrams, which might be used outside of Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager, are specific to the project in which they are created. The following tables summarize project area specificity by component, based on which version of Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager the resources reside in:

Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager 4.0.5 and above:

Component Native/Shared Specific to project area?
Products Native No (global)

Exceptions:
Recently Viewed Products, Favorite Products, and Product Groupings are specific to project areas.
Views Native Yes
Queries Native Yes
Analysis diagrams Shared Yes
Reports Shared Yes

Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager 4.0.4 and below:

Component Native/Shared Specific to project area?
    Products Native No (global)

    Exceptions:
Recently Viewed Products, Favorite Products, and Product Groupings are specific to project areas.
    Views Native No (global)
    Queries Native No (global)
    Analysis diagrams Shared Yes
    Reports Shared Yes

During Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager setup, you are presented with the option to create a sample project area called "Sample Project". As the name implies, this project is intended to get your pre-production (test) deployment up and running quickly. Note that any product, view, and query resources you create in Sample Project will be visible from any other project areas you create, even if you archive Sample Project. Consequently, skip this option when setting up your production deployment, and instead manually create an appropriately named project area.
