Installing Installation Manager fails when the path for the home directory contains unsupported characters

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

You start the installation of IBM Installation Manager. You receive the error:

"Invalid Configuration Location:
The configuration area at '/home' is not writable.  Please choose a
writable location using the '-configuration' command-line option."

Cause

This issue occurs when the path for the home directory contains one of the following characters:

: % # < > "

When the path for the home directory contains unsupported characters, an incorrect path is used for the Eclipse configuration area when you install Installation Manager.

Resolving the problem

To work around this issue, specify a new path for the Eclipse configuration area that does not contain any of these characters:

: % # < > "

Run one of these commands with the -configuration <path> option:

install
installc
userinst
userinstc
groupinst
groupinstc

Example commands:

  • install -configuration /tmp/eclipse/configuration
  • groupinstc -installationDirectory /InstallationManager/bin -dataLocation /InstallationManager/appdata -acceptLicense -configuration /tmp/eclipse/configuration

After Installation Manager is installed, you can delete the files that are created in the specified directory.
