Create view yields mkview: Warning: Config spec OK, but unable to tell view server to load

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Attempts to create an IBM Rational ClearCase view results in "cleartool: Warning: View server should be restarted ... ".

Symptom

The full error message is as follows.

SYMPTOM 1

cleartool: Warning: Config spec OK, but unable to tell view server to load.
cleartool: Warning: View server should be restarted.
cleartool: Error: Set configuration spec of C:\Rational\ClearCase\default_config_spec
failed:
no configuration specification set
cleartool: Error: Unable to create view "\\server\path\view-storage.vws".

SYMPTOM 2

cleartool: Warning: Config spec OK, but unable to tell view server to load.

cleartool: Warning: View server should be restarted.
cleartool: Error: Set configuration spec of C:\rational\ClearCase\default_config_spec
failed: view storage directory or control files unavailable --
additional information may be present in the view server host's view log
cleartool: Error: Unable to create view "\\server\path\view-storage.vws".

The view server log contains the following entry.

view_server.exe(1792): Error: Unable to get view object registry information for view uuid 6e002607.1d2f4707.9e7a.88:a7:0f:b8:61:94: ClearCase object not found
view_server.exe(1792): Warning: Temporary server starting for unusable view at '\\server\path\view-storage.vws'

These errors only show up when trying to create a remote view.

Cause

These two almost identical error messages have two different causes.

CAUSE 1

This error occurs, when you created the view on a Network Attached Storage Device (NAS) with a dedicated Microsoft Windows 2008 or Microsoft Windows 7 view server. Creating the view from the dedicated ClearCase view server itself is in order.

Enhanced caching capabilities of the Microsoft SMB2 protocol cause this problem. Applications might encounter delays or consistency issues with the default SMB2 cache values.

CAUSE 2

The client uses a different registry server than the dedicated view server. The error message from the view servers view log confirms.

Environment

Microsoft Windows client and Microsoft Windows view server

Diagnosing the problem

Steps to troubleshoot:

  1. Verify if you can create a local view.
  2. Verify if you can create the view with storage on the dedicated view server instead of on the NAS device.

If that works, cause 1 applies.

  1. Verify the content of the view servers ClearCase view log.

cleartool getlog -since yesterday  -host <name of view server> view

  2. Verify if both machines in question use the same ClearCase registry server.

cleartool hostinfo -long <name of view server>

cleartool hostinfo -long <name of client>

Resolving the problem

FOR CAUSE 1:

Set the FileNotFoundCacheLifetime cache value on the view server to ZERO.

See the following Microsoft technet web page for information about the SMB2 Client Redirector Caches and instructions how you can alter the cache values.

(The cache values need to be changed on both the client and the view server).

SMB2 Client Redirector Caches Explained

FOR CAUSE 2:

Both the client and the view server must use the same ClearCase registry server and the same ClearCase region. Change the ClearCase configuration settings accordingly.
