SSL handshake failures

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

When trying to send a webservice request from IBM Integration Bus (IIB) or WebSphere Message Broker (WMB) using a SOAPRequest node to an external webservice provider, the following exception is thrown in the logs:

BIP3165S: An error occurred whilst performing an SSL socket operation. Operation: 'connect'. Error Text:'javax.net.ssl.SSLProtocolException: Server resumed session with wrong protocol version'.

Cause

If the remote side of the socket has attempted to resume an SSLSession on a different protocol version, then this could represent a privilege escalation attack. WebSphere Message Broker will (correctly) reject the handshake attempt.

Diagnosing the problem

A JSSE trace and an IP trace should show the protocol change.

Resolving the problem

Ensure network firewalls have provided the necessary access (correct port and protocol access).
