Auxiliary storage growth in MASTER asid with NetView

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Since installation of NetView for z/OS 6.1, auxiliary storage for the Master address space grows up to 2GB even with INITPARM TINYDS specified.

Symptom

auxiliary storage (frames) increases in MASTER address space

Cause

INITPARM statement TINYDS parameter is positional sensitive

Diagnosing the problem

When reviewing dump of address space, IPCS command "ip iplparms" shows what IEFSSNxx member was picked up.

Resolving the problem

TINYDS can be used to reduce the maximum number of pages allocated for CNMCANZ0 data space. The TINYDS parameter limits the data space size to .5G, or 131072 (decimal) pages, which is one quarter the size of the full 2GB data space.

The NetView subsystem initialization routine ignores any value specified on INITPARM on a SUBSYS statement containing INITRTN(DSI4LSIT) that is not the first such statement read by MVS.
If both TINYDS and LOGFORN are needed, specify both values on the same INITPARM, with TINYDS before LOGFORN, separated by a comma, as follows: INITPARM('TINYDS,LOGFORN')

Initially when the problem was reported, the customer had the following specified:

SUBSYS SUBNAME(RJCA) /* SAZOS NV61
INITRTN(DSI4LSIT)
INITPARM('LOGFORN,TINYDS')

The problem was resolved by placing the TINYDS parameter as the first parameter on the INITPARM statement as follows below.

SUBSYS SUBNAME(RJCA) /* SAZOS NV61
INITRTN(DSI4LSIT)
INITPARM('TINYDS,LOGFORN')

Review of the MASTER asid auxiliary storage after NITPARM('TINYDS,LOGFORN') was implemented showed about 130.000 frames (508MB).

Refer to NetView for z/OS 6.1 Documentation APAR OA38553 for more details regarding TINYDS.
