Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack: A scheduled snapshot fails and the error FBSS1061I is displayed.

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

A Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack scheduled snapshots fails. The following message is displayed:

FBSS1061I Volume is currently being used by another process. Unable to initiate snapshot.

Symptom

The Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack logs contain the following message:

1342443602,[7/16/2012 1:00:02 PM]-> FBSS1061I Volume is currently being used by another process. Unable to initiate snapshot [Signature 0x066f2cd7 for 4 DBS_0x066f2cd7; on exchange_test VolLetter C:\]

The volume C:\ on the FastBack Client exchange_test belongs to an Exchange Storage Group.

Cause

The FastBack Client is running on a device that is also running a Microsoft Exchange server. There are two job schedules. One job is to back up the local disks that contain the Exchange Storage Groups. The other job is to back up the Exchange Storage Group.

When the two jobs are scheduled to run at the same time, the job that backs up the Exchange Storage Group fails with the error FBSS1061I because the other job is taking snapshots on the same volume.

Resolving the problem

You can resolve the problem by ensuring that the two job schedules run at different times so that they do not overlap. You must also review the client groups used by the policies that use the schedules for duplicate volumes.
