Changing Portal administration users fails with ADMF0004E: Invalid parameter name CN for command searchUsers

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

IBM WebSphere Portal is successfully installed and configured. The ConfigeEngine tasks wp-change-was-admin-user or wp-change-portal-admin-user are run to change one of the administration users on the system. The configuration task fails with an error message of ADMF0004E: Invalid parameter name CN for command searchUsers. This Technote will document how to resolve this error message and allow the configuration tasks to run successfully.

Symptom

Reviewing ConfigTrace.log, the following messages are observed:

[wplc-validate-user-exists] cn="CN=NewAdminUser,dc=example,dc=com"
[wplc-validate-user-exists] com.ibm.websphere.management.cmdframework.InvalidParameterNameException: ADMF0004E: Invalid parameter name CN for command searchUsers.

Cause

WebSphere Portal invokes the WebSphere Application Server (WAS) management framework when running either the wp-change-was-admin-user or wp-change-portal-admin-user configuration tasks. The WAS management framework is unable to process users or groups that begin with an uppercase "CN" in their full distinguished name.

Environment

Any Portal 6.1, 7.0, or 8.0 environment.

Diagnosing the problem

Collect and review the files as noted in the following document:

Configuring Security for WebSphere Portal

Resolving the problem

If specifying the newAdminId via the wkplc.properties file

1) Backup the wkplc.properties file

2) Open the wkplc.properties file in a text editor

3) Update the property

from:

newAdminId=CN=NewAdminUser,dc=example,dc=com

to:
newAdminId=cn=NewAdminUser,dc=example,dc=com

4) Save changes.
5) Rerun either the wp-change-was-admin-user or wp-change-portal-admin-user configuration task which was previously failing.

If specifying the newAdminId via the command line, perform a similar change to the command line interface, updating from uppercase "CN" to lowercase "cn" for the -DnewAdminId paramater.
