"Object has been closed" error during an SQL Server execute query with WebSphere Cast Iron appliance

Problem

Intermittently, the job would error out with the following error messages in the Web Management Console: An error occurred while connecting to the database. The exception is SQLSTATE: 08S01 ERRORCODE: 0 Error Message: [CastIron Systems] [SQLServer JDBC Driver]A problem occurred when attempting to contact the server (Server returned: Connection reset). Please ensure that the server parameters passed to the driver are correct and that the server is running. Also ensure that the maximum number of connections have not been exceeded for this server. The job is retrying: 1 out of 5 attempts to connect to the database . Another attempt will be made after 30 secs. Error while closing the transcation..[CastIron Systems][SQLServer JDBC Driver]Object has been closed. Internal error: java.lang.RuntimeException: Error while closing the transcation..[CastIron Systems][SQLServer JDBC Driver]Object has been closed. Internal error: java.lang.NullPointerException

Symptom

The symptoms are:

  • Possibly re-running the jobs will execute successfully.
  • The issue is intermittent.
  • The issue does not seem to occur for smaller data result sets.

Cause

The cause is due to the following NIC card settings for the machine hosting SQL Server. The setting is the Chimney Offload State. Contact Microsoft Support if you need assistance with this setting.
With this setting set to enabled, this behavior may occur.

Resolving The Problem

To resolve the problem, change the Chimney Offload State NIC setting to disabled.
