The rpower and rconsole commands are not able to communicate with other nodes in an IBM Smart Analytics System 5600 cluster

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

The rpower or console commands are not able to connect with the other nodes in an IBM Smart Analytics System 5600 cluster, and report they cannot connect to the Baseband Management Controller (BMC) daemon.

Symptom

You may see the following errors when you run the rpower command:

bwlmgmt01:~ # rpower -a query
2659-103 [bwdata02] Internal error, could not connect to the bmc2 daemon.
2659-103 [bwapp01] Internal error, could not connect to the bmc2 daemon.

2659-103 [bwstdby03] Internal error, could not connect to the bmc2 daemon.
2659-103 [bwadm01] Internal error, could not connect to the bmc2 daemon.
2659-103 [bwdata05] Internal error, could not connect to the bmc2 daemon.
2659-103 [bwdata06] Internal error, could not connect to the bmc2 daemon.

Cause

The bmc2 daemon could have hung or terminated abnormally.

Resolving the problem

Use the following steps as root user to restart the bmc2 daemon:

  1. Stop the Hardware Control Resource Manager

    stopsrc -s IBM.HWCTRLRM
  2. Check that no bmc2 daemons are running

    ps -ef | grep bmc2
  3. Terminate any bmc2 daemons using kill -9
  4. Start the Hardware Control Resource Manager

    startsrc -s IBM.HWCTRLRM
  5. Check if rpower is now able to connect to the nodes

    rpower -a query

In the event that the bmc2 daemon is defunct and you are not able to terminate it in step 3, you may need to reboot the management server.
