Collecting Data for SysBack (TSM for System Backup and Recovery): NIM boot

Technote (troubleshooting)

Collecting Data documents aid in problem determination and save time resolving Problem Management Records (PMRs).

Resolving the problem

1) Manually Gathering General Information

  • Complete SysBack version, to 4 digits: lslpp -l *.sysback.*
  • AIX version, technology level, and service pack: oslevel -s
  • Device backing up (for example: IBM 4 mm tape drive) : lsdev -Cc tape and lscfg -vl rmt# (for example, lscfg -vl rmt0)
  • sbenvsup.<mmddyyyy>.tar

Generated by running from AIX:

# sbenv -d /tmp -t -a

Or, from smitty sysback: Utilities -> Gather SysBack and System Information ->

Type or select values in entry fields.
Press Enter AFTER making all desired changes.

[TOP] [Entry Fields]
Directory Name [/tmp] /
Archive data (tar format) yes +
Compress archive image (AIX "compress" command) no +

Gather all data yes +

2) Manually Gathering Specific Information
  • Command or script you're running for the backups
  • Logs generated from the backups
  • sysback.out
Generated by recreating with debug turned on as follows:

# script /tmp/sysback.out
# export SBDEBUG=1
# <sysback command or script you're running>
# exit

3) Gathering NIM boot information

In addition, when booting from NIM, collect the following from the NIM server.

# lsnim -t spot
Lists SPOTs in the NIM

# sbspotcust -q -n <spot name>
Lists sysback version in the SPOT

# nim -o showres <spot name> | grep
Lists BOS / AIX version in the SPOT

# nim -o showres <spot name> | grep "TSM Client"
Gives TSM client version (grepping on tivoli.tsm.client doesn't catch the version, which wraps to the 2nd line)

# nim -o showres <spot name> > showres.out
List all filesets and versions in the SPOT in the showres.out file

From AIX, output from:
# ls -al /tftpboot/<hostname>*
    For example:

    # ls -al /tftpboot/rs77*
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root system 54 May 13 2011 /tftpboot/rs77@ -> /usr/lpp/sysback/netinst/bootimages/52SPOT.chrp.up.ent
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root system 5842 Jan 17 11:30 /tftpboot/rs77.sbinfo*
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root system 5805 Jan 17 11:30 /tftpboot/
