onbar restore returns Unable to write storage space restore data to the database server, 43391, 43140, and 131 (0x83)

Problem(Abstract)

You run an onbar restore and see messages like these:

2012-07-04 17:34:01 3864 3506 /usr/informix/bin/onbar_d -r
2012-07-04 17:34:05 3864 3506 Successfully connected to Storage Manager.
2012-07-04 17:34:05 3864 3506 Begin reserved pages restore (level 0 of rootdbs, Storage Manager copy ID: 0 481491640).
2012-07-04 17:34:05 3864 3506 Completed reserved pages restore (level 0 of rootdbs).
2012-07-04 17:34:07 3864 3506 Successfully connected to Storage Manager.
2012-07-04 17:34:07 3864 3506 Begin cold level 0 restore rootdbs (Storage Manager copy ID: 0 481491640).
2012-07-04 17:39:05 3864 3506 Unable to write storage space restore data to the database server: .
2012-07-04 17:39:05 3864 3506 (-43391) Skipped backup/restore of space 'rootdbs'.
2012-07-04 17:39:05 3864 3506 (-43140) Due to the previous error, logical restore will not be attempted.
2012-07-04 17:39:05 3864 3506 /usr/informix/bin/onbar_d complete, returning 131 (0x83)

Cause

INFORMIXSERVER environment variable is not set correctly. However, it is set to a servername that does exist in the sqlhosts file.

Note: There are other reasons to get these same errors


Diagnosing the problem

The five minute gap in time between these two lines indicates this problem:

Resolving the problem

Set the INFORMIXSERVER environment variable to the correct value then rerun your onbar command.
