"Field does not exist in the Framework Manager model" after some time minutes running an "Import from Framework Manager"

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

User clicks "Transfer - External Data - Import from Framework Manager". User selects/chooses import specification. User clicks 'Run'.
There is a delay (during which the message "Importing external data" is visable at the bottom-left corner). After some time (for example 135 seconds in one real-life case) an error appears.

Symptom

Screen:

    Information
Field does not exist in the Framework Manager model.
    [OK]

Event Viewer (Application log) on Controller application server:

Warning ... VBRUNTIME ... Event ID: 1
The VB Application identified by the event source logged this Application FrDImportBT: Thread...
    ... Error No=-2147221315, Source=DIengine:ReportError#clsDIengine.AdjustFieldInfo#clsDIengine.InitImport, Description=PERIOD, HelpFile=HelpContext=0

Cause

There are several possible causes for the same screen message.

  • TIP: For more examples, see separate IBM Technote #1470842.

This Technote specifically relates to the scenario where the cause is a code production (reference APAR PM70221) problem in Controller.

Environment

Cognos BI (Report Server) configured to use standard (non-anonymous) authentication.

  • In other words, inside "Cognos Configuration" the value of "Allow Anonymous Access" is set to "False".

Resolving the problem

Fix:

Upgrade to Controller 10.1.1 FP1 (10.1.1671) or later.

Workarounds:

  • Method #1
Reconfigure Cognos Configuration to use anonymous access.
NOTE: Be aware that this will affect your security design.
  • Method #2 (Recommended)
Reconfigure Controller application server to use different (older) version of "FrDImportBT.dll".
NOTE: This has not been 100% tested by IBM R&D and therefore there may be unforseen consequences of using this. Therefore, please contact IBM Support for advice before using this method.
