What to do when Cognos Insight does not start from Cognos Connection

Problem

The web browser settings that are described in this topic can affect whether IBM Cognos Insight can install and launch from IBM Cognos Connection. This topic applies to IBM Cognos Business Intelligence and IBM Cognos Express environments.

Symptom

There are several issues that can be resolved by changing the configuration of your web browser. These issues have the following symptoms:

  • When you try to launch Cognos Insight from Cognos Connection, you are prompted to download Cognos Insight, even though you have already installed Cognos Insight.
  • The web browser will not launch Cognos Insight. You may be prompted to allow a pop-up.
  • When you try to launch Cognos Insight from Cognos Connection, two blank windows appear and nothing happens

Resolving The Problem

If Cognos Insight does not launch when you try to provision it from Cognos Connection, change the following settings in your web browser. The location of these settings depends on the browser. For more information, see your web browser documentation or search the web for the keywords in the following lists.

In Microsoft Internet Explorer:

  • Add the Cognos Connection URL to the list of trusted sites or intranet sites. The default settings for trusted or intranet web sites will include the appropriate settings to install and start Cognos Insight.
  • In the security settings, enable active scripting.
  • Enable file downloads.
  • Add the Cognos Connection URL as an exception to the pop-up blocker.
  • Allow script initiated downloads without prompting.
  • In the security settings, open files based on content instead of their extension.
  • In Internet Explorer 8 on Microsoft Windows XP, clear all the cookies. This includes "preserve favorites website data" as it hold cookies as well.

In Mozilla Firefox:
  • Add the Cognos Connection URL to the list of trusted sites or intranet sites. The default settings for trusted or intranet web sites will include the appropriate settings to install and start Cognos Insight.
  • Enable JavaScript.
  • Add the Cognos Connection URL as an exception to the blocked pop-up windows.
  • Allow script initiated downloads without prompting.
