How is the Ideal Line calculated in a Burndown Report?

Technote (FAQ)

Question

How is the Ideal Line calculated in a Burndown Report?

Cause

When running a Burndown report, the ideal line is shown, but no information on its calculation is provided.

Answer

In versions 4.0 and prior, the Ideal line is calculated on the day before the sprint starts. This causes the following implications:

  • New work items or estimates added after the sprint starts are not considered

  • During the sprint, corrections to existing estimates are not considered

  • assumes all planning is done before the sprint starts

Under Enhancement 174923 (implemented in RTC version 4.0.1), the Ideal line will be calculated from the last planned work value, thus restricting the above from occuring, and providing the report with a more accurate Ideal Line.
