ODBC driver 64 bit asks for userid/passwd

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

You have a problem in the export database wizard when trying to export to a Microsoft Excel ODBC Data Source. It asks for a login ID and password. You have office package 32 bit installed on the 64 bit machine.
You're using the IBM SPSS Statistics 64 bit version and Windows 7 Professional (64 bit).

Cause

You cannot mix a 32 bit application (MS office) to communicate via ODBC (Open database connectivity database driver) with 64 bit applications (SPSS Statistics 64 bit).

When you installed the Microsoft Office 32 bit version and the IBM SPSS Statistics 64 bit version and you want to use the Microsoft Office 32 bit ODBC drivers from within SPSS, it will fail.

Environment

Windows 64 bit

Resolving the problem

Both MS Office and SPSS Statistics needs to be installed with the same bitness level, 32 bit or 64 bit.

In case you want to use the 32 bit MS Office software :

1. Install 32 bit MS Office including the 32 bit Microsoft Office ODBC drivers.

2. Install 32 bit IBM SPSS Statistics application.

3. Create the Microsoft ODBC connection via Control Panel - System and Security - Administrative tools - Data Sources (ODBC) OR via the SPSS Statistics - Open Database - New query dialog.

In case you want to use the 64 bit MS Office software :

1. Install 64 bit MS Office including the 64 bit Microsoft office ODBC drivers

2. Install 64 bit IBM SPSS Statistics application.

3. Create the Microsoft ODBC connection via Control Panel - System and Security - Administrative tools - Data Sources (ODBC) OR via the SPSS Statistics - Open Database - New query dialog.
