SETSMSG EXEC statement removed from SMTP cataloged procedure (SMTPPROC)

Troubleshooting

Problem

The following statements were removed from the V1R10 SMTP sample procedure (SMTPPROC): ********************************** //* Turn on SMSG support //* //SETSMSG EXEC PGM=SETSMSG,PARM=ON //SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=* //OUTPUT DD SYSOUT=* //SYSIN DD DUMMY **********************************

Cause

Before V1R9, the SETSMSG EXEC statement was needed to provide support for executing TSO SMSG SMTP commands via the IUCV/VMCF services. In V1R9, SMTP was enhanced to allow SMSG commands to be executed via a MVS MODIFY command. Further testing of this enhancement in V1R10 proved that the SETSMSG EXEC statement was no longer needed to provide users with the ability to execute TSO SMSG SMTP commands.

Diagnosing The Problem

The sample SMTP cataloged procedure (SMTPPROC) shipped with the V1R10 release and later will not contain the following statements:

**********************************
//* Turn on SMSG support
//*
//SETSMSG EXEC PGM=SETSMSG,PARM=ON
//SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=*
//OUTPUT DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSIN DD DUMMY
**********************************

Resolving The Problem

Executing the V1R10 sample SMTP cataloged procedure (SMTPPROC) that does not include the SETSMSG EXEC statement will behave the same as pre-V1R10 SMTP procedures that did include the SETSMSG EXEC statement. In order for SMSG commands to operate in either case, user must ensure that VMCF is active before starting the SMTP procedure.
