CPU usage spikes to near 100% during high I/O operations when using Veritas VxFS

Problem(Abstract)

When using VERITAS VxFS, random CPU spikes near 100% when performing multiple I/O intensive operation such as batch processing and online db2 backups etc.

Symptom

Random CPU spikes to near 100% and possible long I/O wait times.


Cause

This problem is caused by VERITAS Direct I/O driver performance Etrack 2293722 incident.

Environment

DB2 V9.7 or V9.5 using VERITAS VxFS

Diagnosing the problem

Check the fstab.out file in the db2support output to determine if VxFS is being used. Check if the fix for VERITAS Direct I/O driver performance incident 2293722 is installed.

Resolving the problem

Contact Symantec(VERITAS) for the fix for Etrack 2293722, Direct I/O driver performance incident.
