Telnet CTRACE Size and Real Storage Usage

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

How much, and what type, of storage is allocated for Telnet CTRACE?

Symptom

High Telnet real storage usage.

Cause

No matter what size is specified for CTRACE BUFSIZE, 256M is always allocated. However, only the size specified for BUFSIZE is actually backed by MVS and only that size is reported by MVS.

Example: When 32M BUFSIZE is specified, the trace will wrap at 32M. Only the 32M will be backed and reported by MVS. The Telnet CTRACE storage is virtual private storage in SP249, KEY6. However, it can be backed by real frames if there is sufficient real storage available on the system.
