IMS Information Management Tools and z/OS Extended Address Volumes (EAVs)

Technote (FAQ)

Question

Which IMS™ Tools support the use of z/OS® Extended Address Volumes (EAVs) on IMS V12?

Answer

EAVs were introduced with z/OS V1.10, as described in Previewing z/OS Release 10.

The following table provides information about which IMS Tools support EAVs and the minimum maintenance that might be required. The maintenance might vary depending on the version of z/OS. For example, changes were made to the Unit Control Block (UCB) in z/OS V1.13 that might require additional maintenance to be applied for the IMS Tool to work correctly.

Table notes:
1. EAV support is provided for IBM Tools Base from the IMS Tools that require IBM Tools Base.

2. Yes, except for the ICF catalog and VSAM volume data sets (VVDS).

3. For z/OS V1.12, PTF UK53470 provides basic EAV support with the following exceptions:
  • A source or target ICF catalog cannot be defined with extended addressability or EATTR(OPT).
  • The VVDS on the volume where a source or target ICF catalog resides cannot be defined with EATTR(OPT).
  • The VVDS on a source or target volume cannot be defined with EATTR(OPT).

4. For z/OS V1.13, PTF UK53470 provides basic EAV support with the following exceptions:
  • A source or target ICF catalog cannot be defined with extended addressability or EATTR(OPT).
  • The VVDS on the volume where a source or target ICF catalog resides cannot be defined with EATTR(OPT).
  • The VVDS on a source or target volume cannot be defined with EATTR(OPT).
  • Tthe VVDS on a source or target volume cannot be defined with a size greater than 65535 blocks.

5. This product requires IBM Tools Base.

6. See these individual products: IMS Connect Extensions V2.2, IMS Performance Analyzer V4.2, and IMS Problem Investigator V2.2.

7. Yes, except for VVDS.

8. Yes, except VVDS cannot be defined with EATTR(OPT).

9. Tolerates EAV when the data set does not exploit EAV, for example, when a normal data set is written on an EAV volume. Does not exploit EAV, and data sets on EAV volumnes cannpt be read.
