Upgrading Sametime System Console to 8.5.2 IFR 1 fails during installation
During the upgrade of the Sametime System Console from 8.5.2 to 8.5.2 Interim Feature Release 1 (IFR1), the upgrade might fail for various reasons.
If the upgrade fails, the server may be left in an unstable state, and the Websphere Integrated Solutions console (ISC) is unlikely to be available for administration.
The solution outlined in this document can be implemented prior to the initial upgrade to IFR 1 as a preventative measure or can be used to complete the upgrade after a failure has occurred. This solution also applies if you experience these symptoms when upgrading to Sametime 8.5.2, not just IFR 1.
There are several indications in the logs of the situation that led to to the update failure of 8.5.2 IFR 1 or 8.5.2. A review of the Installation Manager logs will help to determine the exact cause.
One condition is an "ejbdeploy" failure. This condition is characterized in the logs with the following stack trace -
[exec] [wsadmin] ADMA0063E: An error occurred during Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) deployment. Exception: com.ibm.websphere.management.exception.AdminException: ADMA0062E: The EJBDeploy program issued the following error messages: [An unexpected exception was thrown. Halting execution.]
Or a stack trace like this one indicates an EJBdeploy failure -
Getting tasks for: isclite
Update of isclite has started.
ADMA5006E: An error occurred configuring isclite in WebSphere Application Server repository: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: com/ibm/websphere/management/application/UpdateScheduler.getEarFileForApp(Z)Lcom/ibm/etools/commonarchive/EARFile;

Two other indications are in the update/replacement of the ISC/SSC portlets themselves. These may also present in the logs with either of these messages -
ADMA5058I: Application and module versions are validated with versions of deployment targets.
ADMA5009I: Extracting application archive to d:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\STSCDMgrProfile\wstemp\wstemp\app_13419c5dc86\ext.

org.eclipse.jst.j2ee.commonarchivecore.internal.exception.SaveFailureException: IWAE0017E Unable to replace original archive: D:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\STSCDMgrProfile\wstemp\Script13419bdad8e\workspace\cells\SSCCell\applications\isclite.ear\isclite.ear
ADMA0169E: Parameter validation failure for isclite:ADMA0167E: File SSCFramework.war does not exist for delete operation.
com.ibm.websphere.management.exception.AdminException: ADMA0167E: File SSCFramework.war does not exist for delete operation
Further, once a failure has occurred it, a manual recovery can be difficult to achieve, as there are a number of applications and configuration items that must be checked
These steps can be implemented prior to the initial upgrade to 8.5.2 or to 8.5.2 Interim Feature Release 1 (IFR 1) as a preventative measure or can be used to complete the upgrade after a failure has occurred.
Step 1 - Backup and replace the 'iscmod_uninstall.py' file that is located in the <WebSphere install root>/STSCServerCell directory with the copy that is attached to this document.
Step 2 - Open a command prompt and navigate to <WebSphere install root>/AppServer/deploytool/scripts/install/ and execute the appropriate ejbdeploy-clear-cache for your OS, for Windows it would be 'ejbdeploy-clear-cache.bat'
Step 3 - Increase the Java heap size for the Installation Manager using the steps in technote http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21574992
Step 4 - Run the Installation Manager again to complete the upgrade process.
