Question:
How can I use the Read Ahead and Read Ahead Cache Size options in FastBack Mount to improve performance?

Answer:
When an application requests data from FastBack Mount, FastBack Mount reads larger chunks of data from the repository to improve performance. The Read ahead option is the amount of extra data that FastBack Mount will read from the repository in addition to the amount of data requested by the application. The extra data is held in the Read Ahead Cache. Increasing the size will help when reading and restoring large files stored in consecutive locations on the original disk. It will harm performance when working with small files that are fragmented on the original disk.

The options below can be configured in the general config section of the FastBackMount.conf file. The last two parameters are used when the data (repository) is stored in a TSM server:

• Read Ahead
• Read Ahead Cache Size NTFS
• TSM Read ahead
• Read Ahead Cache Size TSM

The limitations are:

• Read Ahead limit is 4096 16-KB blocks.
• Read Ahead Cache Size NTFS limit is 75000.
• TSM Read ahead limit is 4096 16-KB blocks.
• Read Ahead Cache Size TSM is 75000.

The defaults are:

• Read Ahead = 2
• Read Ahead Cache Size NTFS = 1000
• TSM Read ahead = 64
• Read Ahead Cache Size TSM = 10000

Changes to the FastBack configuration (Adding, removing or editing of 'Job scheduler',
'Policy' or 'Client group') while snapshots are running is postponed to a time in which there
are no running snapshots. In this situation, the FastBack Server automatically postpones all
scheduled snapshots until the configuration changes are applied. The following message
might display in the "pending jobs" window:

Configuration changes are implemented when all running jobs are complete.
All scheduled jobs are postponed until the configuration changes are applied.
Information about pending jobs is unavailable until the configuration changes
are implemented.
