Problem

ANS1005E: TCPIP error 10054 occurs with Tivoli Storage Manager client operations

Resolving The Problem

When a Tivoli Storage Manager client operation is interrupted by a network related problem, it may encounter errors similar to the following:

ANS1005E TCP/IP read error on socket = 516, errno =
10054, reason : 'Unknown error'.
sessSendVerb: Error sending Verb, rc: -50

ANS1809W Session is lost; initializing session
reopen procedure.



The errno = 10054 is a Windows return code which translates to the following error:
An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

In a broader meaning, Windows operating system is identifying to Tivoli Storage Manager that it has rejected the TCP operation because it was unable to perform the TCP action on the physical network. This results from conditions such as: Tivoli Storage Manager server cancellations of active client sessions, high traffic on the network, poorly configured network settings in the Windows machine NIC, improperly configured routers or gateways, and other types of network related issues.

Tivoli Storage Manager cannot perform the specified action successfully until the offending problem has been corrected. Network troubleshooting should be undertaken by a qualified network administrator to determine why Tivoli Storage Manager client/server traffic resulted in the error, with investigation focusing on traffic volume, routing, and hardware configuration.
