Automatic deployment of Windows client fails with unknown status

Troubleshooting


Problem

The Automatic deployment feature is used to upgrade a Tivoli Storage Manager Windows client. The deployment schedule is successfully executed but the client is not upgraded to the newer level.

Symptom

The Tivoli Storage Manager Client dsmsched.log (schedule log) shows the deployment scheduled is launched successfully, i.e

Executing Operating System command or script:
"..\IBM_ANR_WIN\V6233\DEPLOYCLIENT.BAT SCHEDULE=DEPLOYSCHED DOMAIN=STANDARD AUTODEPLOY=NOREBOOT nodeinfo=TBD"
Scheduled event 'DEPLOYSCHED ' completed successfully.

The Tivoli Integrated Portal (TIP) reports the following status for the schedule :

ANRW0726W Cannot determine the status of the client deployment schedule. The deployment status is unknown.

Cause

IP address is not configured on the Tivoli Storage Manager Server.

Diagnosing The Problem

Review the client setup.log. The log is located at the following location :
C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\IBM_ANR_WIN\VXXX\log\setup.log
In this example, the 6.2.3.3 client is deployed and the log file is located at :
C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\IBM_ANR_WIN\V6233\log\setup.log
In this example, the setup.log shows :

Wed 11/09/2011 16:18:16.93 The deployclient.bat script is started.
Wed 11/09/2011 16:18:16.96 deployclient.bat is removing the deployment manager and temporary files possiblly left from the previous installation.
Wed 11/09/2011 16:18:17.36 Successfully parsed the parameters in the post schedule command.
Wed 11/09/2011 16:18:17.43 scheduledeploy.bat script is started.
Wed 11/09/2011 16:18:17.43 Calling at "16:19" "C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\IBM_ANR_WIN\V6233\updatemgr.bat"

Wed 11/09/2011 16:19:29.08 ANE4225W The setup script is still waiting for the result of querying system information. Ensure that "PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE" is set in the client options file and that a connection to the server can be made without being prompted for a password.
Wed 11/09/2011 16:19:29.08 The deployclient.bat script is exiting.

In this example, the error of concern is the ANE4279T error indicating there is no server information.
This indicates that the Tivoli Storage Manager Server ip address is not configured on the server.
Run the QUERY STATUS server administrative command.

tsm: MYTSM>q status
Storage Management Server for Linux/x86_64 - Version 6, Release 2, Level 3.0
Server Name: MYTSM
Server host name or IP address:

In this example, it shows that the "Server host name or IP address" field is blank. This is what is causing the failure.
A similar failure may occur if the wrong host name of IP address is used. In this case, the wrong address would be used in the AutoDeploy upm.opt file for the TCPSERVERADDRESS option.

Resolving The Problem

Use the SET SERVERHLA administrative command to configure the correct ip address for the Tivoli Storage Manager Server and reconfigure the automatic deployment of the affected client.
