Firmware images larger than 136 MB when base64 encoded fail to deploy

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

You receive WAMT0533E: An Appliance Management Protocol IO exception has been created during communication with the appliance when attempting to deploy a WebSphere DataPower firmware image to a device.

Cause

The problem is caused by the inability of the Appliance Management Protocol implementation in the existing firmware on the device to handle the deployment of firmware images that are larger than 136 MB when base64 encoded. For WebSphere DataPower firmware version 4.0.1 and later, some images exceed this limitation.

Resolving the problem

This issue is resolved for WebSphere DataPower firmware versions 3.8.0.15, 3.8.1.15, 3.8.2.6, 4.0.1.3, and later. One option is to deploy one of these versions first, and then move to desired version. For example, to move from version 4.0.0.0 to 4.0.2.0, deploy version 4.0.1.3 before deploying version 4.0.2.0. Alternatively, you can deploy the desired firmware version directly by using the device WebGUI or CLI.
