Question & Answer

Question

How do you setup a Oracle database connection in BIRT reports with the IBM Rational ClearQuest Eclipse client?

Cause

You would like to create a BIRT data set for your reports and then run queries against the Oracle database.

Answer

Procedure:

  1. Open BIRT in the IBM Rational ClearQuest Eclipse client

  2. Right-click Data Sources in the Data Explorer

  3. Click New Data Source:

  4. Select JDBC Data Source from the data source types displayed and then click Next

  5. Click Manage Drivers… from the New JDBC Data Source Profile:

  6. Click the Add… button from the Manage JDBC Drivers screen:

  7. Navigate to C:\oracle\ora92\jdbc\lib, select ojdbc14.jar, click Open and click OK. The driver now appears in the Manage JDBG Drivers dialog.

  8. Select the Drivers tab, select oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver (1.0), and click Edit…:

  9. Enter Oracle Driver in the Edit JDBC Driver dialog as Display Name, jdbc:oracle:thin:@<host>:<port>:<service> as URL Template and click OK.

  10. Click OK, as the driver has been correctly set up in the Manage JDBG Drivers dialog:

  11. Select the driver just configured from the Driver Class drop-down list

  12. Enter the URL in the Database URL field using the URL Template and substituting values for the database host (IP address), port number, and service name (database name)

  13. Enter the User Name and Password for the database, click Test Connection… to verify the connection is successful, and then click Finish

The data source is now set up and you can create a new data set and run queries against the Oracle database.
