Why are ignored packages listed in a comment block in the actionscript of custom Fixlets that are generated by the Linux RPM Patching Dashboard?

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

The Linux RPM Patching Dashboard uses various inputs to calculate dependencies, and this situation is caused by a conflict between inputs.

Resolving the problem

In some instances, custom fixlets that are generated by the Linux RPM Patching Dashboard with a non-default MPL (Minimum Package List) will contain a section that is similar to below:

// Packages that are neither targets nor dependencies will be ignored.
// See KB 1670 for more Information
// xorg-x11-drv-vmware-10.13.0-2.1.i386.rpm
// xorg-x11-drv-vmmouse-12.4.0-2.1.i386.rpm

The Linux RPM Patching Dashboard uses various inputs to calculate dependencies, and this situation is caused by a conflict between inputs.

  1. During MPL creation (on the "Create Minimum Package List" page), the dashboard will compare all RPM packages that are currently installed on the target Linux machine against all available packages that are officially released and supported by RedHat. In other words, third party packages including BESAgent will be excluded, and will not be part of the MPL. This means that some dependency relationships between packages (from 3rd party) for the packages that remain in the MPL may have been excluded.
  2. During custom fixlet creation (on "Create Custom Fixlet" page), the dependency resolver will calculate dependencies for not only the target RPM Packages (either from selected fixlets or selected individually), but also all packages in the MPL to make sure the final state of the Linux system (after target and dependency packages are all installed) is sound with all dependencies satisfied.
    In short, dependencies related to packages in the MPL but not related to target packages will appear as part of the dependency resolution output. For example, if "xorg-x11-drivers-7.1-4.2.el5.i386.rpm" is installed with "--force" switch without installing its required dependencies, or both the equivalent packages for "xorg-x11-drv-vmmouse-12.4.0-2.1.i386" and "xorg-x11-drv-vmware-10.13.0-2.1.i386" are excluded in the MPL creation, the latter two packages will be in the dependency resolution output.
  3. We have decided to list these dependency packages that are non-target related in the comment block so that our customers can use it as reference. For patching purposes, you can simply ignore those. However, from the standpoint of system integrity, users are strongly encouraged to verify that commented packages are functioning as expected.
