Differences between the Redhat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Content Sites

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

What are the differences between these sites?
Patches for Redhat
Enterprise Linux
Patches for Redhat Linux
Patches for RHEL 3

Resolving the problem

I am subscribed to the following Redhat sites in TEM.

  • Patches for Redhat Enterprise Linux
  • Patches for Redhat Linux
  • Patches for RHEL 3
  • Patches for RHEL 4
  • Patches for RHEL 5
  • Linux RPM Patching
What are the differences between these sites?
  • Patches for Redhat Enterprise Linux is deprecated (obsolete/no longer needed), it puts all supported OSes into a single site and is not compatible with the new dependency-aware dashboard.  You can unsubscribe from this site if you are subscribed to the RHEL 3,4, and 5 sites.
  • Patches for Redhat Linux is even more deprecated (obsolete/no longer needed), it's only for old rh8 and rh9 releases.  You can unsubscribe from this site if you no longer have rh8 and rh9 machines to manage in your BES deployment.
  • Patches for RHEL 3 , Patches for RHEL 4 , Patches for RHEL 5:  These three are current and they are kept separate to reduce the performance cost to scan for information that isn't necessary. They can be targeted more efficiently with site level relevance (eg. OS equals "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5").
  • Linux RPM patching is current and is the dashboard and fixlets for dependency aware patching. Linux RPM Patching depends on the content in the RHEL 3, RHEL 4, and RHEL 5 sites and so these sites need to be installed along with the Linux RPM Patching site.

If you are currently not subscribed to "Patches for RHEL 3,4, and 5" or the "Linux RPM Patching" site and need to be, please contact your sales rep to see if you are entitled to the site mastheads for these sites.
