Why do I get an "Import Failed - Required ActiveX Control Disabled" warning in the Web Protection Module Blacklist-Whitelist Wizard?

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

The WPM Blacklist-Whitelist Wizard requires an ActiveX control to import a list from file.

Resolving the problem

The WPM Blacklist-Whitelist Wizard requires an ActiveX control to import a list from file.

A Windows Internet Options security setting manages the behavior of the wizard ActiveX control. There are a few circumstances under which the "Import Failed" warning message will appear.

ActiveX controls Disabled
The related Internet Options ActiveX security setting is disabled - the import from file fails and there is no ActiveX control confirmation message displayed. The wizard import screen will immediately display the "Import Failed" warning message after the Import button is clicked.

Remedy
Configure the Internet Options security setting to prompt at each ActiveX control request.

  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Internet Options.
  2. Select the Security tab and highlight the Internet Web content zone.
  3. Click Custom Level… to open the Security Settings window.
  4. Navigate to ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe for scripting > select Prompt.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Yes in the Warning confirmation dialog.
  7. Click OK to close the Internet Properties window.
Re-open the wizard and when an import from file is attempted, allow the ActiveX control by clicking Yes within the confirmation dialog.

ActiveX control denied via Confirmation Dialog
The related Internet Options ActiveX security setting is correctly set to prompt ? Upon list import from file, an ActiveX control confirmation dialog is displayed to allow the operator to allow or deny the ActiveX control. When an operator selects to deny the ActiveX control, the "Import Failed" warning message is displayed.

Remedy
After clicking the Import button, you must allow the ActiveX control by clicking Yes in the confirmation dialog. To bring back the ActiveX control confirmation dialog, the wizard must refresh. To refresh the wizard, click the Back button to navigate to the Policy Management screen and restart the policy creation process. Alternatively, you can close and re-open the wizard.
