How do I edit registry keys for the currently logged in user?

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

The following describes using the BigFix client to modify the HKEY_USERS.

Resolving the problem

The settings for the Currently Logged in user actually get applied to their key in "HKEY_USERS". Trying to use the key that is generated by Windows for their username would not be an easy thing to implement. Instead if you search through the keys, using relevance substitution, you can have the generated name inputted for you.

An example of this is:

Q: (name of key whose (value "Logon User Name" of key "Explorer" of key "CurrentVersion" of key "Windows" of key "Microsoft" of key "Software" of it as string as lowercase = name of current user as string as lowercase) of key "HKEY_USERS" of registry)
A: S-1-5-21-1644491937-308236825-839522115-500

Using this relevance string you can insert the generated key into either relevance or actionscript for your needs.

The following regset script will change the Windows Wallpaper to a specific image file:

regset "[HKEY_USERS\{name of key whose (value "Logon User Name" of key "Explorer" of key "CurrentVersion" of key "Windows" of key "Microsoft" of key "Software" of it as string as lowercase = name of current user as string as lowercase) of key "HKEY_USERS" of registry}\Control Panel\Desktop]" "Wallpaper"="C:\\{pathname of windows folder}\\Blue Lace 16.bmp"
