TEM interaction with Microsoft's automatic update client

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Coexistence between the update utility from Microsoft (or any other update utility) and the TEM Client .

Resolving the problem

The update utility from Microsoft (or any other update utility) and the TEM Client will coexist peacefully on the PC with no conflict.

However, you might notice that certain versions of Windows Update check for required patches to see if you need a patch, but if you install the required patch manually or through any technology other than Windows update, Windows update will continue to show the patch as still being required. In contrast, the TEM Client can immediately detect that a patch has been applied--even if by some other process--and will correctly show the computer as no longer being vulnerable to that issue. If the Windows Update utility automatically updates a patch on a computer, the TEM Client will notice that the patch is no longer necessary and will report to the TEM Server that the patch is no longer needed.
