Is there a reason that I receive an error after changing an item's status to Pending?
If you change the status of an Inventory Item that is associated to an active contract you will receive the below error message. By design Maximo will not allow for an item associated to a Purchase Contract to be set to a status of Pending. Maximo will only allow one to change the status to Active from Pendobs, if you do not see the active status available for Maximo 711 then you have an issue in you install. A hot fix is available that allows for the Active status to be seen when an Inventory Item is in the status of Pendobs.

BMXAA5373E - Cannot change status. Item exists on one or more open contracts.
