Backupset format in a Tivoli Storage Manager v6 server

Technote (FAQ)

Question

Cannot restore client data for some nodes from a backupset generated on a version 6 server.

Cause

The present documentation needs clarification about the backup set format, this will be corrected with APAR IC75009.

Answer

When the GENERATE BACKUPSET command includes a Backup-Archive Client node at client level 6.1.x (i.e. at least 6.1.0 but less than 6.2.0) or any other node that is authorized to act as a proxy for one of the included nodes is at version 6.1.x, then the backup set will be in "deduplication" format. Backup sets in the "deduplication" format can be restored only by the 6.1.0.2 or later client. Clients before version 6.1.0.2 cannot restore from a backup set that is in the "deduplication" format.

When the GENERATE BACKUPSET command includes a Backup-Archive Client node at client level 6.2.0 or later or any other node that have one or any other node that is authorized to act as a proxy for one of the included nodes is at version 6.2.0 or later, then the backup set will be in "distributed deduplication" format. Backup sets in the "distributed deduplication" format can be restored only by the 6.2.0 or later client.

Example :
If a proxy node version 6.1.0 is used and is granted proxy authority for a version 5.5 node.
The backup set generated on a 6.2.x server for the 5.5 node will be in the "deduplication" format, not in the previous v5 format. This means that the original 5.5 node will not be able to restore from that backup set. The client will have first to be upgraded at least to 6.1.0.2.
