Troubleshooting


Problem

Image backups fail (perhaps intermittently) due to resourceutilization being too high.

Symptom

Image backups fail.

Cause

Resourceutilization is set too high.

Diagnosing The Problem

The dsmerror.log may show messages similar to:

ANS1259E The image snapshot operation failed. Diagnostic text: tsmInitializeSnapshotSet.
ANS1228E Sending of object '\\host\m$\mount' failed
Return code 4116 unknown
Unknown system error
Please check the Tivoli Storage Manager Error Log for any additional information

The application event log may show messages similar to (not necessarily at the time of failure):

The description for Event ID ( 4112 ) in Source ( TsmVssPlugin ) ...The following information is part of the event: VSS processing encountered error 'VSS_E_SNAPSHOT_SET_IN_PROGRESS' in the Volume Shadow Copy API 'StartSnapshotSet'., For more information, see the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client error log.

Resolving The Problem

Edit the options file to reduce RESOURCEUTILIZATION to a value between 2 and 4. Be sure to restart any Tivoli Storage Manager services after making the change.
