ANS9365E VMware vStorage API error. (API return code : 13)

Troubleshooting

Problem

The BACKUP VM command is used to backup a virtual machine on VMware vCenter. The command fails with API retrun code 13.

Cause

Local admin account missing from Virtual Center server

Diagnosing The Problem

The backup vm command fails with the following errors :

ANS9365E VMware vStorage API error.
TSM function name : vddksdkOpen
TSM file : vmvddksdk.cpp (1311)
API return code : 13

ANS4151E Failure mounting Virtual Machine 'virtual machine name'. RC=-1
03/31/2011 14:13:28 ANS4150E Incremental backup of Virtual Machine 'virtual machine name' failed with RC -1

Resolving The Problem

In order to do the VMware backup of virtual machines, it is necessary to specify which VMware userid to use with the Tivoli Storage Manager client. This is done with the "dsmc set password" command. For example :

dsmc SET PASSWORD –type=VCB virtcenter.ibm.com Myuser Mypassword

In this above example, the VMware userid is Myuser. This userid must be a local administrator account on the VMware vCenter server to have sufficient authority to backup the VMware virtual machines.
