Problem(Abstract)

Upgrade on windows fails with error DBI1969N return value is "2".

Symptom

When upgrading DB2 to V9.7 on windows the following error is displayed

The upgrade of the instance "<INSTANCE_NAME>" has failed. The return value is "2".

Check the install log for message similar to the following

Action 9:34:20: DB2CustomAction. Configuring DB2 instances
1: ERROR: DBI1969N An error occurred when creating a new file in the instance directory.
Explanation:
An internal error occurred when creating a new file in the instance directory.

User response:

Ensure that you have write access to the instance directory.

The error can also be caused if there is not have enough space available on the drive.



Resolving the problem

Clean up drive . Make sure you have 2-3 GB of free space available


Then run the following from the DB2 command window.

db2iupgrade -INSTALL /u <ID>,<PASSWD>  DB2
