Can CDS utilize a named instance of SQL Server or must it be a stand alone database?

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

We are about to upgrade our environment and will be installing Collaboration and Deployment Services (C&DS.) Our DBA had a question related to the database for the repository. Can CDS utilize a named instance of SQL Server or must it be a stand alone database?

Resolving the problem

C&DS is setup to make calls to the database through JDBC. As long as the DBA is setting up the Instance and database in such a way that the connection to that database would provide a unique setting (ie. likely the instance name would be different) so that our program would be able to communicate with it via JDBC connection, then it should be fine.

Below is what I am understanding you are about to do:

SQL server instances:

machine1\instance1
machine1\instance2
machine1\instance3

Let us say that C&DS will be hosted on database called PASWPLATFORM under instance2.

This specific example should be fine as when you are setting up C&DS, you would be specifying the SQL server to be: machine1\instance2 rather than just machine1.
