Resolving the problem
This error can be caused by a monitor tool called Nagios which checks if the 3 listener ports of Model Builder (GUI, DM and MONET) are still active.
When attempting to verify the MONET port, Model Builder cannot interpret the request from Nagios and decides to close down the server.
On the GUI port no error occurs. On the DM port an error message is posted (socket_gets), however the server does not close down.
Disabling the listener on the MONET port resolves the issue.
