Error # 4293, Error # 4080, Error # 4382, Error # 4285 in SPSS

Troubleshooting

Problem

I am computing a new variable by typing Syntax commands into the syntax window under File->New->Syntax in SPSS. When I run the syntax, I receive one of the Error numbers or a combination of the Error numbers above. What is going on?

Resolving The Problem

One possible reason for receiving these error messages is attempting to compute a variable with a name which goes against the SPSS variable names rules. If you were to type this variable name as the Target Variable under Transform->Compute or attempt to define it in the SPSS Variable View, you would most likely receive an error message "Variable name contains an illegal first character" or "Variable name contains an illegal last character".

For information regarding variable names rules, please search the SPSS Help system in your installed copy of SPSS under Help->Topics and view the "variable names, rules" topic
