Problem

Does IBM Statistics client use multiple processors and or multiple cores if available?

Resolving The Problem

The following IBM SPSS Statistics analytical procedures (indicated by syntax command) are multi-threaded:

CORRELATIONS
CSSELECT
FACTOR
PARTIAL CORR
REGRESSION
SORT

All other analytical procedures are not multi-threaded and, consequently, will make use of only one processor/core when executed in a multi-threaded/multi-process environment. Please see the documentation for your IBM SPSS Statistics product to learn about the multithreaded capabilities of the above commands.

It should be noted that with the introduction of SPSS 10.0 for Windows and the SPSS Distributed Architecture, it is possible to launch multiple instances of IBM SPSS Statistics on the same computer. In this latter case, each instance of the Statistics 'process' (operating system process) will execute on the least-busy processor. The operating system controls this decision. So, all other things being equal, if you launch two instances of IBM SPSS Statistics on a two-processor/core system, each instance of the Statistics process should get its own processor. If you were to then launch a third instance of SPSS for Windows then the operating system would make a decision as to which processor was the least busy and assign this new Statistics process to that processor. Consequently, when launching multiple versions of the Statistics program, the Statistics operating system process will be evenly distributed by the operating system across the available processors
