"Failed to Open Document" when attempting to open an SPSS output (.spo) file

Problem

I am attempting to open an output file (*.spo) within SPSS for Windows, but I receive an alert with a "SPSS for Windows" banner that reports "Failed to open document". When I click , I see a blank Viewer window and no output is displayed. What is the problem?

Resolving The Problem

You are possibly attempting to open an SPSS .spo file that was created in a later release of SPSS for Windows. Such files are not backwards compatible, and viewing them would require that you upgrade to the version of SPSS in which the .spo file was created. In general, even incremental upgrades in SPSS involve occasional enhancements to output which render .spo files created in a given version inaccessible to the versions of SPSS immediately preceding it.
