IBM Support

Excluding a single drive from FullVM Backup.

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document provides additional details on how to exclude a drive from backup. For example, assuming your VMware Guest has three drives, C: D: and E: but you want to only backup the D: and E: drives.

Resolving The Problem

With the Tivoli Storage Manager for Virtual Environments client (version 6.3 or below), it is not possible to exclude a drive from a Full VM backup of a VMware guest.

Starting for the Tivoli Storage Manager for Virtual Environments client version 6.4, it is possible to exclude a drive from a Full VM backup using the exclude.vmdisk option. For example :

EXCLUDE.VMDISK <vmname> "Hard Disk 3"

The drive can also be exclude from the command line. For example :

dsmc backup vm "<vmname>:-vmdk=Hard Disk 3"

Starting with IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments V8.1, it is possible to also exclude a disk from backup using the IBM Data Protection extension with the vSphere web client. This feature was added with VMware tagging support. For more information, refer to the "Protecting virtual machine disks by setting the disk protection" section of the online Information Center.
