Is there a way for SMTP to store a mail file in error for later repair and subsequent delivery?

Question & Answer

Question

We are getting this message occasionally: EZA5465E date time Deleting Spool File from undetermined origin job number (spoolid) We are trying to best understand what we should do to identify these as close to realtime as possible. Is there a way for SMTP to store the mail file (that is in error) for later repair and subsequent delivery, instead of deleting it?

Answer

Message EZA5465E is sent to the SMTP batch log to show when a spool data set of an unknown origin is deleted. SMTP cannot accept an NJE spool data set if its origin cannot be determined. This message is generated because either the originator's user ID or the originator's node ID was missing.

The SMTP mail server is not designed to store a mail file in error for later repair and subsequent delivery. When SMTP encounters a bad spool file, it deletes it so that it can get on to the next spool file.

You might want to research migrating to the new CSSMTP mailing application.

With the CSSMTP mail server, available starting with z/OS Communications Server V1R11, you can code BadSpoolDisp Hold to keep your bad JES spool files around. If BadSpoolDisp Delete is coded, CSSMTP deletes the bad JES spool file. For more information about the BadSpoolDisp configuration statement, see Customizing the CSSMTP configuration file to handle undeliverable mail in z/OS Communications Server: IP Configuration Guide.
