Signal 11 error messages for the issCSF process while running tcpdump and making policy changes

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Running tcpdump while changing the Local Tuning Parameters or Security Interfaces policy can result in a signal 11 error on the issCSF process which can cause the security interfaces failing to link.

Symptom

Error messages seen in the /var/log/messages file:

Dec 10 16:54:51 2010 ipsname issCSF[xxxx]: (Proventia) - ERROR Received signal 11
Dec 10 16:54:51 2010 ipsname issCSF[xxxx]: (Proventia) - ERROR Signal code 1

Resolving the problem

IBM Security Systems does not support the running of the tcpdump utility while making changes to the Local Tuning Parameters or Security Interfaces Policy. To recover from the error state, you must stop the tcpdump utility and reapply the policy.
