ABEND878 during SMTP processing

Troubleshooting

Problem

The SMTP address space abends intermittently with ABEND878-10.

Symptom

IRR401I 878 ABEND DURING RACF PROCESSING OF
  LOCATE REQUEST FOR ENTRY SMTP.CONN257.NOTE
IRR401I 878 ABEND DURING RACF PROCESSING
IRR413I RACF MANAGER REQUEST ID WAS RCK06001
IEA995I SYMPTOM DUMP OUTPUT 273
SYSTEM COMPLETION CODE=878 REASON CODE=00000010

Cause

The ABEND878-10 indicates that not enough virtual private storage was available to satisfy a storage request. A PC system trace entry shows that a storage obtain was issued by RACF storage manager (IRRRSM00) at location 0476D4DC.

Resolving The Problem

If you are using the RACF exit ICHRCX02 (RACROUTE REQUEST=AUTH postprocessing), and ICHRCX02 is processing SMTP, remove the SMTP started task name from that exit.

Because SMTP needs authority to create, read, write, and purge data on the JES spool, any security programs, such as RACF®, that protect JES spool access must have the SMTP started task name in their definitions of authorized users. If you are using the RACF security product, you can find more information about RACF controls for JES spool in z/OS Security Server RACF Security Administrator's Guide.
