Cannot migrate users preferences if the user already exists in RDS

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Attempts to migrate a users preferences in IBM Rational Directory Server (RDS) Apache results in no update of those preferences if the user already exists when using IBM Rational Change.

Symptom

The user preferences you would have expected to be migrated are not moved.

Cause

When data has been migrated to a new RDS server the first time, all the data is moved but
if data is added to the old RDS server (a new personal report or query in Change) and another
migrate is done, the new preferences do not get moved.

If you delete the user in the new RDS and then migrate the new data, the preferences still do not
get migrated.

Environment

Rational Directory Server and Rational Change.

Diagnosing the problem

Migrated data does not show up as expected for users preferences.

Resolving the problem

The problem is that when a user is deleted in RDS Apache, the definition of the user is deleted but not the preferences.

To be able to migrate the latest user preferences, the user and their preferences must be deleted in the new RDS server.

  1. Delete the user using Rational Directory Admin (RDA).

  2. To delete the preferences for the user you must use a third party LDAP browser.
    1. With the LDAP browser, connect to the new RDS server.

    2. Go into the branch:

      dc=telelogic,dc=com/ou=Applications/ou=Telelogic Change/ou=Preferences

    3. Then delete the entry for that user.

There will likely be 2 entries for the same user in that branch.

If the user name is XXX you will see a first entry called: XXX

and you might see a second entry called: XXXExt

The first entry XXX contains the user preferences: Personal Reports and queries

The second entry XXXExt contains the homepage settings for the user.

    4. Once all these entries have been deleted run the migrate again to import the user and preferences.
