Troubleshooting
Problem
After installing DB2 Enterprise Server Edition (ESE) version 9.5 on the Linux for zSeries platform, a memory limitation of 4 Gigabytes (GB) will be seen if a limited-use permanent license (db2ese_o.lic) was applied. A 'limited-use' license is provided if DB2 is shipped as part of a product 'bundle' with other IBM software.
Symptom
The DB2 license command 'db2licm -l' will display the following output:
Product name: "DB2 Enterprise Server Edition"
License type: "Restricted"
Expiry date: "Permanent"
Product identifier: "db2ese"
Version information: "9.5"
Max amount of memory (GB): "4"
Cause
Certain IBM products provide a limited-use edition of DB2 as part of their installation media. Starting in DB2 9.5, the edition of DB2 provided for limited-use with products which bundle DB2, in most cases, changed from Enterprise Server Edition (ESE) to Workgroup Server Edition (WSE). In addition, a 4 GB limitation to Instance memory was introduced in limited-use (bundle) WSE licenses. This limitation is enforced as of Fix Pack 4; at this level of DB2, the database manager configuration parameter instance_memory cannot be increased beyond 1048576 (4K pages, equal to 4 GB).
On the Linux for z/OS platform, DB2 Workgroup Server Edition (WSE) is unavailable, so it is substituted with Enterprise Server Edition (ESE). The previously-mentioned instance memory restriction should not apply in this case.
Resolving The Problem
To resolve the issue, apply the latest fix pack for DB2 9.5.
This restriction has been removed, for limited-use DB2 ESE on the Linux for z/OS platform, as of DB2 9.5 Fix Pack 6a.
