Unable to open 3584 LTO drive on Windows after operating system restart

Technote (troubleshooting)


A Tivoli Storage Manager server is configured with an IBM 3584 library and LTO tape drives. The server logs error regarding being unable to open a tape drive after the Windows operating system is rebooted.


After restarting the Windows operating system, the following messages are logged in the activity log of the Tivoli Storage Manager server while attempting to use the LTO tape drives :

ANR8779E Unable to open drive mt1.0.0.3, error number=123.
ANR1401W Mount request denied for volume ABC123L2 -mount failed.


The device driver for the Library medium changer and the tape drives are using the Windows device driver while the IBM device driver is needed to operate the library and tape drives.

Resolving the problem

Check Windows device manager. Open the drive in question and make sure it is using the correct IBM device driver. Install the correct IBM device driver if needed and issue "Update Driver" in Windows device manager.
